Hermès Birkin and Kelly: resale value and pre-owned prices in 2026

Boutique prices, the premium on the secondary market, the criteria that move value: what you need to know before buying or selling a pre-owned Birkin or Kelly in 2026.

The Birkin and the Kelly hold a special place in the pre-owned market: they are among the few fashion items that routinely resell above their boutique price. This is by no means automatic, though. It depends on size, leather, colour, hardware and condition, and it can reverse for a configuration that is in little demand. This article gives cautious orders of magnitude for 2026 and explains how to read them.

One clarification before getting into the numbers: our valuation tool covers watches for now. For bags, the ranges below come from public sources (reported boutique prices, specialist dealer listings, auction results) and should be read as benchmarks, not as an estimate of your piece.

Why these two bags resell above the boutique price

Hermès does not sell the Birkin or the Kelly online, and does not sell them on request. Each piece is offered in a boutique to a client, usually after a purchase history with the house. This selective allocation produces an effect comparable to the waiting list for highly sought-after watches: new supply is rationed, and the secondary market becomes the only immediate way to get the bag.

The gap between the retail price and the pre-owned price is what watch collectors call a premium over retail. For the Birkin and the Kelly, this premium has existed for years, but its level varies widely from one configuration to another. A black Birkin 25 in Togo leather with gold hardware does not carry the same premium as a Birkin 35 in a seasonal colour that few people want.

Reference boutique prices in 2026

Hermès revised its prices in January 2026 and, for the most common leathers, aligned pricing on size rather than leather. The figures below are European prices reported by the specialist press; they are indicative and may differ slightly by country.

ModelIndicative boutique price (Europe, 2026)Pre-owned range 2026 (good condition, classic configuration)
Birkin 25 (Togo, Swift)about €9,600€17,000 to €28,000
Birkin 30 (Togo)about €10,500 to €11,000€15,000 to €24,000
Birkin 35 (Togo)about €11,500 to €12,000€11,000 to €18,000
Kelly 25 (Togo, Epsom)about €9,600€16,000 to €26,000
Kelly 28 (Togo, Epsom)about €10,100€14,000 to €22,000
Kelly 32 (Togo, Epsom)about €11,100€10,000 to €16,000

The pre-owned ranges are deliberately wide. They exclude exotic leathers (crocodile, alligator, ostrich, lizard), special editions and collector's pieces, whose prices follow an auction logic and can multiply these amounts.

What moves the value of a Birkin or a Kelly

Size

The trend of recent years favours small sizes. The 25 has become the most sought-after size, whereas the 35, long the standard, now trades at a much smaller premium, sometimes none. The Kelly follows the same logic: the 25 and 28 concentrate demand.

Leather and colour

Grained leathers (Togo, Epsom, Clémence) are the most liquid: they stand up well to use and reassure buyers. Smooth leathers such as Box mark more easily. As for colours, neutrals (black, gold, étoupe, craie) resell fastest. A seasonal colour can fetch a high price if it is rare and desirable, or stay on sale for a long time if it is not.

Hardware

Gold and palladium are the two common finishes. Some rarer finishes (rose gold, brushed finishes, plating on limited series) can add a premium, provided the whole is consistent and documented.

Condition and accessories

As with a watch, condition weighs heavily. Worn corners, darkened handles, deformation and odours lower the value far faster than the bag's age. Accessories count too: orange box, dust bag, lock and clochette, keys, rain cover, invoice. The equivalent of a watch's full set has a price, especially the invoice, which makes resale and proof of origin easier.

Date of manufacture and the stamp

Every Hermès bag carries a discreet stamp indicating the workshop and year of manufacture, in the form of a letter (sometimes inside a geometric shape, depending on the period). This stamp alone does not prove authenticity, but it lets you date the bag and check consistency with the other elements. A 2025 bag in perfect condition and a well-kept 2010 bag do not sit at the same point in the range, even with an identical configuration.

Fake Birkins and Kellys are numerous and sometimes very convincing. Before any purchase, read our guide to authenticating a luxury bag: it details the checkpoints and the role of independent authentication.

Buying or selling: the channels

The sales channels for bags resemble those for watches, with comparable price gaps. Selling to a professional is fast but happens below market value, because the professional carries the risk, the stock and the warranty. Consignment and specialist platforms get closer to market price in exchange for a commission. Auction houses are relevant for rare pieces, notably in exotic leather.

The mechanisms are explained in detail, for watches, in our article on why trade-in prices sit below market value; they apply almost unchanged to bags. And bags resold above their purchase price raise a specific tax question, covered in our article on the taxation of selling luxury goods, which describes the rules in France; check the rules that apply in your own country.

Is a Birkin an investment?

The value retention of the Birkin and the Kelly is real, but it is neither uniform nor guaranteed. The premium depends on supply rationing decided by the house: if Hermès increases its volumes, or if demand shifts towards other sizes, the premium on a configuration can shrink within a few years. The large size is the recent illustration. You also need to account for resale costs (commission, authentication, insured shipping), which absorb a significant share of the apparent gain.

The reasoning is the same as for watches: our comparison of Rolex, Patek and Audemars Piguet shows that even the strongest references go through corrections. A bag is bought first and foremost to be carried.

In short

  • In 2026, the Birkin 25 and Kelly 25 trade well above their boutique price of about €9,600.
  • Large sizes (35, 32) carry a much smaller premium, sometimes none.
  • Grained leather, a neutral colour, good condition and complete accessories put a bag at the top of the range.
  • Authentication is essential before any purchase or sale.
