Giving a luxury watch for Christmas 2026: budgets, models that hold their value, tax and sizing
What budget to plan, which models keep their value, whether the gift needs declaring for tax, how to choose the right size without giving the surprise away: the guide to giving a luxury watch for Christmas 2026 without a misstep.

A luxury watch is one of the few gifts that can be passed on, and sometimes gain value. It is also a purchase where it is easy to go wrong: a model that depreciates quickly, the wrong size, a delivery time that misses 25 December. This guide covers the four questions to settle before Christmas 2026: the budget, the model, the tax side of the gift and the size.
The calendar: start early
The most sought-after models cannot be bought in December. At an authorised dealer, steel watches from the major houses are often allocated via a waiting list, and even an available watch may need bracelet sizing or an engraving. Allow plenty of time:
| Step | When | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Set budget and model | October – early November | compare new and pre-owned calmly |
| Reserve or buy | before the end of November | limited stock, engraving lead times |
| Have a pre-owned watch checked | as soon as you buy | authentication or a service takes time |
| Adjust the bracelet | after Christmas, with the recipient | keep the removed links |
Note too that several houses change their retail prices on 1 January: buying in December means paying the current year's price. We detailed this point in our article on 1 January price increases.
What budget for what gift
The ranges below are orders of magnitude for retail or market prices in 2026; a model's precise market value is shown on its page.
| Budget | What you can find | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Under €2,000 | mechanical watches from respected brands | Tissot PRX, Hamilton Khaki Field, Seiko Presage |
| €2,000 – €5,000 | first luxury watches, in-house or chronometer-certified | Longines Spirit, Oris Aquis, pre-owned Tudor Black Bay 58 |
| €5,000 – €10,000 | major houses, new or recent pre-owned | Omega Seamaster Diver 300M, Cartier Santos, Rolex Oyster Perpetual |
| Over €10,000 | iconic references | Rolex Submariner or Datejust, gold Omega Speedmaster, Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso |
Our guide to the first luxury watch details these levels model by model.
The models that hold their value
A gift is not an investment, but it is nice to know a watch will keep its value. Value retention depends mainly on the reference's reputation, underlying demand and production.
- Steel Rolex: the Submariner, the Datejust and the Oyster Perpetual are among the most liquid watches on the market. The Datejust lends itself particularly well to gifting, thanks to its variety of sizes and dials.
- Tudor: the Black Bay 58 offers a good balance between price and value retention, with a 39 mm diameter that suits many wrists.
- Omega: the Speedmaster Moonwatch is a classic with stable demand.
- Cartier: the Santos and the Tank outlast fashions, and suit a man or a woman equally depending on size.
Conversely, very ornate watches, overly personal editions and some solid gold models suffer steeper depreciation on resale. A personalised engraving, however touching, reduces a watch's appeal to a future buyer: if you are set on one, choose the caseback rather than a visible spot.
New or pre-owned for a gift
Giving a pre-owned watch is perfectly acceptable, provided it is flawless. A recent pre-owned full set, with box, papers and invoice, often gives access to a model you cannot find new before Christmas. Have it serviced, or at least checked by a watchmaker, before giving it. On Causli's listings, each watch is matched against its market value, and the Fair Price tool tells you whether a price asked elsewhere is consistent.
The gift and tax: customary present or manual gift (France)
This is a question people rarely ask, and one that can matter for a valuable watch. The rules below are those of French tax law; if you or the recipient live in another country, gift rules may be entirely different, so check them locally.
- The customary present ("présent d'usage"): in France, a gift made for an occasion (Christmas, birthday, wedding), in line with custom and of a value proportionate to the giver's income and wealth, is not subject to gift duties and does not need to be declared. Proportionality is assessed case by case: a €3,000 watch given by someone with a comfortable income generally counts as a customary present; a €50,000 watch much less so.
- The manual gift ("don manuel"): beyond that, the gift is a manual gift, subject to gift duties according to the family relationship, after an allowance. Between a parent and a child, the allowance is €100,000 per parent and per child, renewable every fifteen years; it is €31,865 from a grandparent to a grandchild. Since 1 January 2026, manual gifts are in principle declared online on impots.gouv.fr, within the month following their disclosure to the tax authorities.
A useful point for the future: in France, if the recipient one day resells the watch, the sale will be subject to the 6.5% flat tax if the price exceeds €5,000, or, by option, to the capital gains regime for movable assets, which requires proof of the acquisition date and price. For a watch received through a declared gift, the value stated in the declaration serves as the reference. In every case, hand over the purchase invoice with the watch: it serves as proof of authenticity, warranty and tax documentation all at once. For a high-value case, a notary will tell you which route suits.
Choosing the right size without spoiling the surprise
Diameter is judged on the wrist, and lug-to-lug width counts as much as the diameter itself. A few benchmarks for a round case:
| Wrist size | Recommended diameter (sports watch) | Recommended diameter (dress watch) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 16 cm | 34 – 38 mm | 31 – 36 mm |
| 16 – 18 cm | 38 – 40 mm | 36 – 39 mm |
| Over 18 cm | 40 – 42 mm and up | 39 – 41 mm |
To measure discreetly, borrow a watch the person already wears and note the buckle hole or the number of links. A metal bracelet is easily shortened: buy it complete, and have it adjusted afterwards. Keep the removed links, which are part of the full set on resale. Finally, ask the seller whether an exchange or adjustment is possible after the holidays.
