Watch auction records 2025–2026: the standout results and what they teach
A steel Patek Philippe 1518 at 14.19 million francs, an F.P. Journe at over 10 million dollars, a Geneva sale at 96 million: the results that marked watch auctions since 2025, verified, and the lessons to draw for an ordinary watch.

Watch auctions broke several records between autumn 2025 and spring 2026, after two calmer years. These figures make the headlines, but reading them takes method: a record concerns a piece, not a market. Here are the most striking verified results, then what they say, and do not say, about the value of the watches you own.
The results to remember
The amounts below are those communicated by the auction houses or consistently reported by the specialist press. Dollar conversions are those published at the time of the sales.

Patek Philippe 1518: vintage at the top
The 1518 is the first series-produced perpetual calendar chronograph, made from 1941 to 1954. Almost all examples are in gold; only a handful are in steel, which explains the November 2025 result, presented as the highest price ever achieved by a vintage Patek Philippe and the top watch result of the year. This record belongs to the tradition of the house's vintage complications, which have dominated the rankings for decades.
In May 2026, another vintage Patek, the 2523 world time known as "South America", passed 10 million dollars, about double its estimate according to Phillips. It is only the third vintage wristwatch to cross that threshold, all sold by the same house.
F.P. Journe: the independent that joins the top tier
The standout fact of the period is an independent watchmaker breaking through to the level of the great historic houses. The FFC prototype designed with Francis Ford Coppola reached about 10.8 million dollars in December 2025, a record for the brand and for an independent. Five months later, a Chronomètre à Résonance from the "Souscription" series passed 6 million.
Both pieces are unique or nearly so, with documented provenance. They do not set the market value of series F.P. Journe watches, but they confirm the place collectors now give to the most sought-after independents.
Record-breaking sales as a whole
Beyond individual lots, it was the totals that stood out:
- Phillips New York XIII (December 2025): about 43.5 million dollars, every lot sold, a record for a watch sale in the United States.
- Phillips Geneva XXIII (9 and 10 May 2026): about 74.8 million Swiss francs, or 96.3 million dollars, presented as the highest-grossing watch auction in history. Almost all of the 225 lots found buyers and the house announced 43 world records.
- Christie's Rare Watches Geneva (May 2026): about 32.4 million Swiss francs, the house's highest total for a multi-owner watch sale.
Christie's also announced a worldwide total of about 162.5 million dollars in watch auction sales for 2025, and Phillips a record year.
Cartier, Lange, Daytona: category records
The most telling records for a collector are not always the highest. Three caught attention in spring 2026:
- The Cartier Crash made by Cartier London: around 2 million dollars at Christie's. Cartier's vintage shaped watches have become a segment in their own right; vintage Tanks benefit too (see our Tank page).
- The 1916 Lange Grande Complication: a record for the brand at Sotheby's, a sign of interest in the pre-war history of the Saxon manufacture, distinct from modern production (A. Lange & Söhne).
- The Daytona "Paul Newman" 6241 "John Player Special": a record for this reference. Vintage Daytonas with exotic dials remain safe bets at major sales, provided provenance and condition are impeccable.
The lessons for an ordinary watch
These figures feed the idea that "watches are going up". It deserves nuance.
- The top and the middle of the market have decoupled. Several spring 2026 analyses noted that common series references (steel Royal Oak, Rolex in production, recent Nautilus) remained fairly stable while the top end broke records. A record in Geneva does not lift your Submariner.
- Real rarity makes the price. Steel on a model produced in gold, a prototype, a unique piece, a famous provenance: records almost always combine several of these criteria. A limited edition of a few thousand pieces does not qualify.
- Original condition comes first. Unrestored dials, unpolished cases, period documents: that is what separates an estimate from a record. For a modern watch, the same principle applies on a smaller scale, as we explain regarding the full set.
- Confidence is returning at the top. Sell-through rates close to 100% on catalogues of more than 200 lots signal solid demand for quality pieces, after the 2023 pullback.
How to read an auction result
A published result can refer to two different amounts: the hammer price, announced by the auctioneer, and the price including the buyer's premium, which houses generally give in their official results. The gap between the two is significant. Before comparing two records, check that they are the same type of amount, and the same currency: a result converted into dollars at the exchange rate on the day of the sale is not comparable with a result in Swiss francs from another year.

In short
2025 and 2026 were record years for watch auctions, driven by vintage Patek Philippe and by independents. These results tell you about collectors' appetite for the exceptional, not about the value of a series watch. For that, the useful benchmark remains the value retention observed in everyday sales: calculate your watch's market value to find out.
