After the MoonSwatch, the Swatch Group applied the same recipe to another of its prestige houses: Blancpain. On 9 September 2023, five bioceramic Scuba Fifty Fathoms arrived in a selection of Swatch boutiques, at 400 dollars in the United States, with an argument the MoonSwatch did not have: a mechanical movement. The reception was calmer, and the resale value reflects it. Here is what you need to know before buying one, or selling one.

An automatic Swatch with the design of a historic dive watch

The Scuba Fifty Fathoms takes up the codes of the 1953 Fifty Fathoms, one of the first modern dive watches: a large case, a graduated rotating bezel, highly legible indices. It is made of bioceramic, like the MoonSwatch, but powered by the Sistem51, the automatic movement assembled in a fully automated way by Swatch. That is the main difference from its Omega cousin, which runs on quartz.

The name is not decorative. "Fifty Fathoms" means fifty fathoms, about 91 metres, the depth targeted by the combat divers for whom Blancpain designed its watch. The Scuba Fifty Fathoms takes up this figure as its water resistance rating, which makes it a real swimming watch, not just a style object.

The first five models bear the names of the five oceans and one colour each: orange for the Arctic, yellow for the Pacific, blue for the Atlantic, green for the Indian Ocean, grey for the Antarctic. The Ocean of Storms, named after the lunar Ocean of Storms, was the first variant outside the series; it is also the one that most often shows a slight premium on the secondary market, its all-black finish contrasting with the bright colours of the series. The Pink Ocean, by contrast, is not limited: it is sold at the same price as the others, with no technical change.

These dates and prices are those of the launch announcements reported by the specialist press; prices may have varied by country. Check the price displayed in the boutique on the day you buy.

Why its market value is calmer than the MoonSwatch's

Three reasons explain why the Scuba Fifty Fathoms generally resells around its retail price, without the frenzy of the MoonSwatch's first weeks.

  1. The fame of the source model. The Speedmaster is known to the general public thanks to the Moon; the Fifty Fathoms is known mostly to enthusiasts. Demand from beyond the enthusiast circle is therefore weaker.
  2. The higher price. At €400, an impulse purchase is less natural than at €250, and the margin left for resellers is thinner.
  3. Continuous production. The editions remain available in boutiques for months. As long as new supply exists, pre-owned cannot climb much above it.

On the secondary market, a new Ocean of Storms recently changed hands for around 500 dollars on a resale platform, and worn examples appear between roughly 340 and 490 dollars. These are one-off observations, not a market value: for series models, expect rather to recover the purchase price, minus platform fees.

The real Fifty Fathoms, by comparison

The collaboration has the merit of making known a watch that deserves it. The Fifty Fathoms was born in 1953 at the initiative of Jean-Jacques Fiechter, then head of Blancpain and a diver himself, and it quickly equipped French combat divers. Today, the collection comprises several families, from the Fifty Fathoms Automatique to the more understated Bathyscaphe.

ServiceSwatch exchange or repairmanufacture service

These are two different objects. The Scuba is a Swatch paying tribute to a design; the Fifty Fathoms is a manufacture watch whose market value is calculated like that of a prestige watch, from the reference, condition and presence of a full set. There is no indication that the collaboration has pushed up the value of pre-owned Fifty Fathoms, as was observed for the Speedmaster after the MoonSwatch. Above all, it has increased their visibility.

One thing to know: maintenance

The Sistem51 is designed as a sealed movement, assembled by machines and not intended to be taken apart by a watchmaker. If it fails, the watch is exchanged or repaired by Swatch, not serviced like a traditional mechanical watch. That is consistent with its price, but it changes the long-term logic: you do not keep a Scuba Fifty Fathoms for thirty years with regular servicing, as you would a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. For resale, it also means that a worn and scratched example has little way of regaining its initial value.

Where to buy the Scuba Fifty Fathoms

  • In a Swatch boutique: it is sold in a selection of boutiques, not online, and not at Blancpain. The number of pieces per customer has sometimes been limited at launches.
  • Pre-owned: resale platforms and private sellers. Fakes exist, but are less widespread than for the MoonSwatch. The same precautions apply: box, papers, a receipt from an identifiable boutique, and close examination of the dial and caseback finishing.

If you are torn between several Swatch collaborations, our article on the prices and resale value of every MoonSwatch details the other big family.

Is it worth it?

As a watch, the Scuba Fifty Fathoms is one of the Swatch Group's most coherent collaborations: a mechanical movement, real water resistance, a historic design. As an investment, it is not. Buy it to wear, at boutique price, and do not count on a gain. If you want a watch that holds its value, look at the Fifty Fathoms itself, or at references with strong value retention.

Practical information

  • Official collaboration page: blancpain.com/en/blancpainxswatch
  • Boutiques selling the collection: check on Swatch's website before travelling, as the list is not the same for every edition.
  • Before buying pre-owned: compare completed sales, not asking prices.

In short

The Scuba Fifty Fathoms is a good watch at €400, but not one that gains value: only the Ocean of Storms regularly shows a slight premium. If you own a real Fifty Fathoms, or any other prestige dive watch, calculate its market value to find out what it is worth today.
